Frequently Asked Questions
Everything You Need to Know About the Help America Hear Program
How do I apply for a hearing aid?
To apply, you must complete the application and include all required documents outlined on page two of the application form.
Who is eligible for a hearing aid?
To qualify for a hearing aid, you must:
Have a household income of $36,000 or less per year (before taxes).
Have moderate to profound hearing loss that hearing aids can improve.
Lack any other way to cover the cost of hearing aids.
What types of hearing aids are provided?
We offer two styles of brand-new ReSound prescription digital hearing aids:
Behind-the-Ear (BTE): Worn comfortably behind your ear.
Receiver-in-Canal (RIC): A discreet option with the receiver placed in your ear canal.
Why is there an application fee?
Help America Hear is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and 100% of the application fee helps cover operational expenses. As a small grassroots organization, we rely on these contributions to continue providing hearing aids to those in need. If you have concerns about the fee, we’re happy to discuss them with you.
Is the application fee refundable?
If an application is denied, a portion of the fee may be refunded, depending on the time spent processing the application.
How long does it take to receive a hearing aid?
Once all required documentation is submitted, the review and approval process takes 2-3 weeks. The entire process, including provider matching, can take 2-6 months.
How will I receive my hearing aids if approved?
Each approved applicant is assigned a Hearing Health Care Professional who participates in the Help America Hear Program and will handle the fitting process.
How long does it take to find a provider?
Finding a provider can take 2-6 months, depending on:
Whether your current provider agrees to work with the program
The time it takes for a new provider to accept and process your application
Finding a Hearing Health Care Professional who dispenses ReSound hearing aids
How can I help speed up the process?
Provide at least three zip codes where you are willing to travel for service
Assist in finding a provider willing to work with Help America Hear
How can a Hearing Health Care Professional participate?
Professionals can be introduced to the program either by an applicant or through direct outreach from the Help America Hear team.
What if no providers are available in my area?
We make every effort to find a provider near you, but applicants must be willing to travel up to 50 miles from their home if necessary.
What type of hearing test is required?
Applicants must provide an audiogram exam that includes:
Binaural speech scores
Air and bone masking tests
MCL and UCL levels
Note: The hearing test cost is the applicant’s responsibility. While many insurance plans do not cover hearing aids, some may cover testing. Check with your provider by calling the number on your insurance card.
Can I apply if I have a hearing aid benefit?
Yes, but if you have a hearing aid benefit, your application will be considered Tier II, which has a higher application fee than Tier I.
What if I can’t afford the application fee?
We recommend reaching out to local organizations for assistance, such as:
Religious institutions
Civic organizations (Rotary, Lions Club, Kiwanis, etc.)
Local elected officials
When requesting support, emphasize that you are looking for a hand-up, not a handout—many organizations are willing to help.
What is the Photo Release Form?
This form grants permission for Help America Hear to share your story, helping raise awareness about the program’s impact.
What support do I receive after getting my hearing aids?
Your hearing aid provider will offer 3-5 follow-up visits or up to one year of service, depending on their policy.
Are there any additional costs beyond the application fee?
Applicants may be responsible for:
Batteries
Additional accessories
Extended warranty (highly recommended)
Any additional hearing tests required by the provider
